So far this year we’ve seen a couple great games come out. The Last of Us is without a doubt a Game of the Year contender, if not the hands-down winner. Most people who haven’t played it will probably brush NCAA Football 14 off as the same game all over again, however, Electronic Arts really stepped up with this years offering. The claim this is “the most realistic football game ever” isn’t hyperbole, this game is amazing! It is truly unfortunate next year’s release will be without NCAA involvement, here’s hoping 2K Games can bring even more innovation to college football gaming. But what about the rest of 2013’s releases? After watching every game trailer, looking at screenshot after screenshot and then reading every press release, I have come up with the six games I feel are THE games to play while waiting for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
7. Carmageddon: Reincarnation
I had a real hard time picking between Carmageddon and Saints Row 4. Honestly, putting Carmageddon on the list is a cheat. It is simply here as a nostalgia entry. When I saw the press release for a new game in the series, memories of LAN parties with n1njr and our friends came flooding back (especially the times we replaced the NPCs with the Spice Girls).
6. Saints Row 4
I’ve played the Saints Row games, and while they are sandbox games, they never “clicked” with me. Unlike Fallout 3 (3,000+ hours), Fallout: New Vegas (400+ hours) and The Saboteur (400+ hours), I think I have a combined 100 hours across the first three games. What I’ve seen so far from the newest game in the series, has peaked my interest enough that rather than disregard it (my first thought), I am actually going to give it a go. Adding the ability to wear Mandalorian armor and run around looking like Boba Fett is just icing on the cake.
5. Grand Theft Auto V
Like the Saints Row, I have played the Grand Theft Auto games, unlike Saints Row, I’ve actually played quite a bit. Though I have never completed a game, I have a lot of fun playing them. The more I see of GTAV, the more I want to play it. The bundled Grand Theft Auto Online is what I am most excited about though. Being able to build “Crews” (clans for us old-school gamers) with GTAV and Max Payne 3 and then carry them over to GTA Online has me as giddy as a school girl. I can’t wait to join Khaotic Rage in some illicit behavior.
4. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
I have really enjoyed the Assassin’s Creed series, well except ACIII. It just couldn’t hold my attention enough to finish it. I am so excited about this game, I’m going to be going back to ACIII so I can finish the story in its entirety before setting sail in Black Flag. Khaotic Rage and I have probably watched all of the Black Flag trailers three or more times each. Black Flag looks so amazing. I’ve always claimed pirates are better than ninjas and Black Flag is going to allow me to captain my own ship. And the ability to harpoon sharks? Oh Yeah!!
3. Batman: Arkham Origins
Ah Batman, one of the few DC Comics characters I actually like, so I’m always happy when a new game or movie comes out. Origins simply looks amazing. Set five years before Batman: Arkham Asylum, Origins will finally allow Batman to fast travel via the Batwing. Now I can play without feeling like I’m Tobey MaGuire web-slinging around Gotham City. Honestly, the only thing about this game that worries me is Warner Brothers moving development from Rocksteady Studios to Warner Bros. Games Montreal.
2. Disney Infinity
If Disney puts as much effort into Infinity as Activision did with Skylanders, Bobby Kotick is going to have a heart attack trying to compete. Disney owns so many licenses people have known and loved for a very long time, if they implement these properties correctly, Infinity will be around for years.
I’m going to be perfectly honest here. Watch_Dogs looks spectacular. From what I’ve seen and read, this game is going to consume me the same way Fallout 3 did. Firstly, it is open world. Most importantly though, I’ll be running around hacking. Not just hacking computers, but any electronic device. Cell phones, ATMs, traffic lights are all hackable. Yeah, this game is going to suck me in like no other game has.
